How do I stop my Gmail Chat from automatically signing in whenever I check my e-mail?

I’ve been getting quite fed-up with people messaging me on Gmail Chat before I can reach the “Sign out of chat” tab every single time I sign in to check my e-mail. Is there a way to stay permanently out of chat and not auto-sign-in?
